چکیده

Patients with Parkinson's disease were asked to make ballistic elbow flexion movements of 10, 20 and 40 degrees. Normal subjects made all these movements in the same amount of time with a single 'triphasic' EMG pattern of successive bursts in biceps, triceps and biceps. Almost all the patients made some movements requiring additional cycles of alternating biceps and triceps activity. Most of the patients exhibited at least one example of a longer movement taking more cycles than a shorter movement. It is argued that this behaviour explains previous kinematic analyses of movement in patients with Parkinson's disease and represents a physiological mechanism of bradykinesia. In part on the basis of the data presented here, it is suggested that a normal role of the basal ganglia in movement is to energize the appropriate muscles required to make the movement.

P181: Effect of Aquatic Therapy on Improvement of Patients with Parkinson Disease: A Systematic Review

Parkinson disease (PD) is a degenerative neurological disorder that affects 0.5- 1% of old people in western countries. It primarily affects mobility function, and associated with increasing disability over time. People with PD express bradykinesia, rigidity, tremor, progressive postural instability and muscle weakness as symptoms of PD. Various exercise programs, including resistance or aerobi...

Changes in sensorimotor function associated with the degree of bradykinesia of Parkinson's disease.

Changes in coordinated eye and hand movements associated with the progress of bradykinesia were studied in 31 parkinsonian patients and 8 age-matched healthy subjects. Among the parameters expressing the changes in motor behaviour, the interval between the onset of eye and hand movements was most sensitive. This parameter reflected the difference in the progress of the symptom in the two motor ...

Network Activity Patterns in the Subthalamic Nucleus of the Rat

In Parkinson’s Disease, pacemaker-like stimulation of the Subthalamic Nucleus (STN) at a frequency near 130 Hz can suppress symptoms like tremor, rigidity and bradykinesia. However, the mechanism by which this so-called Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) exerts its effect is unknown. In order to increase our understanding of the network in which the STN is involved (the basal ganglia, among others in...

Neural targets for relieving parkinsonian rigidity and bradykinesia with pallidal deep brain stimulation.

Clinical evidence has suggested that subtle changes in deep brain stimulation (DBS) settings can have differential effects on bradykinesia and rigidity in patients with Parkinson's disease. In this study, we first investigated the degree of improvement in bradykinesia and rigidity during targeted globus pallidus DBS in three 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-treated rhesus mac...

Motor Deficits, Exercise, and Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurological disorder that results in progressive dopamine depletion within the substantia nigra. This dopaminergic loss leads to bradykinesia, tremor, postural instability and/or rigidity, and ultimately a decline in functional independence. This article reviews the effect PD has across physiological, cognitive, and functional domains and then reviews how various ...
